History
Early in the Stone Age 7000 years ago, there were human beings living in this area. It belonged to Sushen in Xizhou Dynasty. Donghu Nationality lived here in the period of Spring and Autumn Warring States. King Hui once set county named Liaodong here in Yan Dynasty, and Liaodong County was kept up after the overthrow by Qin. It was under jurisdiction of Xuanying County formerly and later on belonged to Yuexi State in Han Dynasty. Bohaida took over Yuexi and changed it into Fu State in the first year of the reign of Emperor Tangxuanzhong ( 71AD), Fu State, i.e., current Tieling town has a history of more than 1300 years till now. Liaotaizu smelted silver in this place in 917, so changed Fu State as Yinzhou---Silver State. Tieling Wei was set up in Ming Dynasty, and turned into Tieling County in the third year of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (1664)
Tieling has a long cultural history, and there is a well-known saying in Liaoning Province that there are two most famous places in Liaoning, one is Liaoyang in the south and another is Tieling in the north. Xiajiadian Upper-class Cultural Site excavated in Daqing Village and Zhenxipu Village shows there had been cultural activity and economic ties with central China in this area early in Yin and Shang Dynasty, the bronze arms, bronze bell of Warring States, knife currencies and market currencies of Yan State, and five-ball-money all strongly demonstrated that Yan not only pioneered but ruled the Northeast of China in a long term. There are famous cultural relics--- Tieling White Pagoda and Ciqing Temple at Dragon-head Mountain built in Tang Dynasty, Shantou Pass, Guyu Town, Shangbian Wall, Victory Bellfry and Stone Tower in Yilu, together with Tomb of Councilor Erge of Qing Dynasty and Tomb of Handmaid of Jin Dynasty. All these rich cultural relics display high wisdom and lofty architecture craftsmanship of forefathers and marked the long history of Tieling. Tieling situates at strategic point. It was called “the north key to Shenyang” where is a place contested by all strategists in history. General Xue Yingui of Tang Dynasty once arrived at the bank of Cai River to feed his steed water in an expedition against Gao Juli. General Li Wenzhong came to Shantou Pass chasing after Emperor Shun of Yuan Dynasty. Governor-general of Liao won great honour by utterly defeating Wu Liangha in Zhenxipu. Qingtaizu the founder of Qing dynasty started war and killed Ming’s generals in Tieling Town in an operation named “Seven-revenge to thank Heaven”. Both the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and the Rebellion of Tangzi Allied Army spread to Tieling. Tieling had born brunt of Russian-Japanese War broken out in 19th century. Tieling had been the strategic spot early at the times of Liao and Jin dynasty, five states, five armies and eight counties were successively set up in this area. Tieling Wei set up in Ming Dynasty was an important fort to defend invasion from Mongolians and Nuzhen tribes. It was under administration of Shengjing i.e. now Shenyang, where troops of the four divisions of the “Eight Banners” Army were stationed. The aggressors of Russian czar demarcated lands attached to the railway and stationed a large amount of army. Japanese aggressors replaced Russian force after the Russia- Japan War, and expanded colony residence area, and further set up West Battallion, South Battalion and a warehouse for Guangdong Army. They often did military exercise preparing to attack. Local people suffered a lot from the wars they launced.
Tieling people inherited the revolutionary tradition initiated Yihetuan Movement aiming at rejecting Japanese commodities and blackballing foreign forces. In order to revolt the oppression of the feudalists’ rule, farmers of Huangguodong united to refuse to pay tallage in the fifth year of Republic of China. Workers of Tieling struck four times from 5th to 20th year of Republic of China. Teachers and students started up strike three times after “9.18 Event” breaking out in 1931. People from eastern mountainous area successively organized Victory League and Anti-Japanese Army of Volunteers to fight bloody battle against Japanese aggressors. During War of Liberation, Tieling people led by the CCP unfolded local armed guerrilla wars
Tieling is a place propitious for giving birth to great men. Over the past thousands of years, people of various nationalities lived and multiplied on this splendid land, many truly great men were gestated, there appeared famous personages in every age in both military and literary field. During Ming Dynasty there was general Li Chengliang who stationed Liao and achieved great success in war, another general Li Rusong who led an expedition army to defet Japanese army utterly in Korea. There were famous finger painter Gao Qipei and famous calligrapher Wei Wenwei in Qing Dynasty. There were modern revolutionary martyr Ren Fuchen---a great internationalist soldierand the head of China Regiment of Soviet Russian Red Army, devoted his life for the founding of the first socialism country, martyr Shi Pu who is praised as “ an outstanding young man ensanguining Yuhuatai ”, Lu Mingji, adept in both the pen and sword, holding CP Committee Secretary General of Liaoji Prefecture sacrificed his life in order to salvage his bodyguard, famous hero Liu Cuigang known as “Flying General” initiated warring achievement for China air force, he shot down 9 planes, and also revolutionary martyr Chang Longji who shot dead Japanese lieutenant general Pubenshilong, Xu Zhi the head of Changtu County devoted his life in order to secure his comrades and guard the red regime in the front line. And moreover there were proletariate revolutionlists Gao Congming, Se Zheheng, Zhu Chengze, Qing Fengqi, Gao Erhua, Sun Xilin, Feng Jiping, Ma Shitu, Guan Junyan and Che Xiangshen etc.. There are numerous officials of prefecture and division level and above having served in the party, government and army, public figures, experts and scholars working home and abroad. Especially Zhou Enlai–– a contemporary giant and deeply beloved of Chinese people, once studied in Yingang School of Tieling, Zhou Enlai kept high aspiration at heart and towered above the rest in height of intellect when he was a child. His logion “ May we meet at the times when China take off in the world” has come true. Nowaday Yingang School has turned into” Relic Site of Zhou Enlai’s Childhood School”. All these add to great honour for Tieling.
